Chapter 4

Dylan grabbed the backpack he left in the park on his way to his apartment. He was surprised no one had taken any of his belongings.

Then again, all the bag contained were his clothes, old phone, a couple of bills and apartment keys.

When he approached Max yesterday, he expected to head back home after telling Max the truth. Well, mission accomplished.

Max’s reaction...had been unexpected. Hurtful, despite the fact Dylan understood the werelion’s motives. Max didn’t think he deserved a second chance.

Max was wrong.

Stung by Max’s rejection, Dylan had left in a hurry, tears blurring in his eyes. It didn’t matter. When Dylan set his eye on something, he did whatever it took to achieve his goals...except he wasn’t entirely confident he could break the past’s hold on Max.

Dylan couldn’t forget Max’s declaration.

I only love one man. That’s Pat. He’s my mate. Always.

Dylan didn’t get it. What was the point of loving someone who couldn’t love you back?

He headed for home, pissed off. In need of company. Maybe his buddies Ben and Jerry could help. Dylan knew needed to watch his diet because he was getting a bit round in the middle, but he had a perfectly acceptable excuse to consume an entire liter of ice cream. Or two. Whatever worked.

After stopping by the convenience store near his building, he picked up a tub of cookie dough ice cream. When he opened the front door, he heard a sob inside. Rock jumped up from his couch, ran up to him and gave him a tight hug.

“Dude,” Dylan rasped. “I can’t breathe.”

“You stupid idiot. Where have you been? I’ve been so worried,” Rock finally said after letting him go.

“Sorry. I left my phone. Max sort of—took me home.”

Rock’s eyes grew wide as saucers. The other tabby shifter punched him in the shoulder. “Fuck, man. You finally gave up your V-card? I’m so proud of you.”

“That’s not it.” Dylan let out a heavy sigh.

Frown on his lips, Rock studied him closer and followed him to the kitchen. Dylan set his bag down and took out his favorite comfort food. Rock knew what the ice cream was for.

“Fucking hell, Dylan. What happened?” Rock demanded, grabbing his shoulder.

Dylan took out a spoon, offering one to Rock. Rock relented. They settled in the living room couch. Dylan flipped off the cover and took a huge spoonful.

His best friend waited until Dylan finished several bites.

“Spill,” Rock ordered.

Dylan did, leaving no detail behind. When he was done, Rock looked stunned.

“Shit. That’s deep, Dylan.”

“I know, right?”

Dylan took another scoop, savoring the bits of cookie dough mixed in with vanilla ice cream. This made everything better. Heck, this was better than sex—not that Dylan would know, but he could imagine how sex with Max would be fantastic.

Way better than anything he ever read.

Stupid stubborn lion.

Why did Max have to throw him away like that?

“He’s a fucking idiot. That’s all I have to say. Good riddance, right?” Rock crossed his arms when Dylan didn’t immediately agree with his declaration. “You must be joking.
